Pump Sizing
For the healthy growth of fish and plants, a pond or water garden needs to circulate
the water through a filter and back into the pond (usually via a waterfall or stream).
Estimating the volume of water per hour that should be filtered varies depending on whether
the pond has fish in it or not.
For a pond with fish, all the water needs to be filtered each hour, while a pond
without fish needs to have half the water filtered each hour.
If you have a pond 20 feet long, 10 feet wide and two feet deep, your pond
will contain 3000 gallons (each cubic foot of water contains 7.5 gallons).

For the best circulation of water, the pump should be placed at the
opposite end of the pond from where the water will come back into the pond
(this means you will be pumping the water about 20' before it reaches the filter or waterfall).
A pump (such as the EasyPro 2200) that is rated for 2200 GPH, will deliver less
when it has to pump the water 20' away and up 4 feet to the filter.
Each 10 feet in length that the water must be pumped equals 1 foot in height, or head.
In this case, 6' of head height is the number to use on the graph.
This is important when determining how many gallons will be delivered.
